Dermal Fillers

The development of lines and wrinkles are often the first signs of aging one notices. This often causes patients to feel much younger than they appear. Dermal fillers are an excellent option for patients wanting to look younger by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and restoring the lost facial volume associated with aging.   

A dermal filler is a gel-like substance injected just below the skin to fill in and smooth out wrinkles. There are several different fillers on the market, each with different properties and designed for different areas. The facial plastic surgeons at Advanced Aesthetics use dermal fillers comprised of hyaluronic acid, a nontoxic polymer naturally found in human skin, joint fluid and cartilage. Because of this, it has a very low allergy potential and a high safety profile. Hyaluronic acid fillers are soft and easy to inject at various depths in the skin. These types of fillers can also be dissolved if desired. 

Dermal fillers are performed in the office with local or topical anesthesia. They are fairly painless, with patients easily tolerating injections to sensitive areas of the face including the lips. The results are instant with most patients having little to no bruising or swelling. 

Dermal fillers are particularly successful in treating: 

• Nasolabial folds or “smile lines” 
• Lips 
• Temples 
• Fine lines around mouth 
• Marionette Lines (downturned corners of mouth)

They can even be used to improve depressed scars. Results from dermal fillers depend on the type of filler and treatment area but they generally last between six to eighteen months.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC: an injectable that adds volume to the face, fills in lines and wrinkles or augments the lips. It is hydrophilic, meaning it bonds with water molecules in the body. By doing so, it is able to maintain fullness and bulk in the skin.

Sculptra® Aesthetic: an FDA-approved injectable, composed of Poly-L-Lactic acid, that helps gradually replace lost collagen — an underlying cause of facial aging. It is indicated for volume loss and hollowing in the cheeks, midface and temples. Sculptra® stimulates your body to produce more collagen, restoring the fullness to volume depleted areas and deeper wrinkles. It requires multiple treatment sessions and results can last for more than two years.

FAQ 

Can I combine dermal fillers with other treatments?

Yes, dermal filler can be combined with both surgical and non-surgical treatments, such as Botox® or laser treatments.

How long will the results last?

While all dermal fillers provide long lasting results, the treated area and type of filler can influence how long it lasts. Also, each patient is different and can metabolize the fillers at different rates. On average, the length of treatment is as follows:  

• JUVÉDERM® Ultra: 9 to 12 months 
• JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC: 6 to 9 months 
• JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC: up to 2 years 
• JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE® XC: up to 18 months 
• Sculptra® Aesthetic: more than 2 years

What can I expect after treatment?

There is no downtime after treatment with dermal fillers. You can resume work or physical activity immediately. You may have some minor bruising or swelling that will improve over a few days. Most patients who develop these side effects notice they are completely resolved within a week.
