Hair loss can be a significant source of anxiety and stress in both men and women. In fact, more than 80% of men and nearly half of all women experience significant hair loss during their lifetime. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for confidence and self-esteem to be lost with it. While there are a multitude of treatment options available, many of these options can be expensive, ineffective or come with unwanted side effects. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a safe, minimally invasive and cost-effective treatment that utilizes the body’s own natural growth factors to stimulate hair growth.
Benefits of PRP
- increases blood supply to the hair follicle
- increases shaft size (thickness)
- increases density of hair follicles
- Decreases hair loss
- Stimulates new hair growth by triggering and maintaining the growth phase of the hair cycle
The Process
A small sample of your own blood is taken and placed in a centrifuge, which spins the blood at high speeds. This separates the platelet rich plasma from other components of your blood. The platelet rich plasma is then injected directly into the scalp at the level of the hair follicle. Topical numbing or topical freezing is used for patient comfort. The entire procedure takes roughly 30 minutes.
Recovery
Recovery after PRP treatment is fast with minimal downtime. Most patients resume their daily activity within 48 hours. Patients are asked to refrain from brushing or washing their hair for 48 hours. Some patients experience minor transient discomfort in the scalp.
FAQ
What causes hair loss?
There are a variety of factors that can contribute to hair loss, some even out of our own control. These include genetics, poor nutrition, aging, hormonal changes, trauma and more.
Am I a good candidate?
PRP is best for those with thinning hair or those who are in the beginning stages of hair loss. Patients with longstanding baldness or scar related hair loss are not great candidates.
Do I need to stop any medications?
How many treatments do I need?
Typically, a series of three treatments are performed four weeks apart. Patients can then elect to do maintenance treatments every six to 12 months thereafter.
When will I see results?
Roughly three to six months from your initial treatment.
