CO2 laser resurfacing is a rejuvenation procedure designed to use high energy laser beams to eliminate scars, lines, wrinkles or other skin imperfections. It is an ablative laser that penetrates the skin’s surface, layer by layer, to remove thin layers of skin with minimal damage to the surrounding area. In addition to helping remove superficial damage caused by sun and aging, the CO2 laser heats up the deep layers of the skin (dermis), thus stimulating the growth of collagen and helping improve skin firmness and texture. As the resurfaced skin heals, the skin appears tighter and smoother.
At Advanced Aesthetics, we use a fractionated CO2 laser, which leaves microscopic columns of untreated tissue throughout the treatment area. This shortens recovery time and reduces the risk of side effects without sacrificing results. The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the treated areas. Topical and local anesthesia are used for patient comfort. Oral medication and/or IV sedation are offered for those interested.
Recovery
During the first week after treatment, it is common for your skin to be red, dry, swollen and raw. It will feel similar to a sunburn. You will begin to notice the skin peeling during this time. It usually takes somewhere between five to 10 days for the new skin to fully re-epithelialize. Patients will be cleansing the treated area and applying a thick layer of aquaphor ointment to keep the area hydrated. Once your skin has re-epithelialized, it can take weeks for the redness or pink hue to fully fade. It is recommended that patients take one or two weeks off from work and that physical exercise be paused for three weeks. No makeup or other skin care products, unless instructed by the provider, should be used for three weeks as well.
FAQ
When can I expect to see results?
While improvement can be seen as early as one or two weeks post treatment, collagen stimulation and tightening of the skin can continue for months after treatment. Final results are usually achieved three to six months after CO2 laser resurfacing.
What are the potential complications of CO2 laser resurfacing?
Overall, CO2 laser resurfacing is generally safe. Side effects can include infection, viral reactivation (i.e cold sores), scarring, milia, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
I have a darker skin complexion. Am I still a candidate for CO2 laser resurfacing?
Patients with light and medium skin complexions are best suited for CO2 laser resurfacing. Patients with darker skin tones tend to have a higher risk of pigmentary changes and may be better suited for an alternative treatment such as microneedling.
How long will the results last?
With good skin care (sunscreens, skin-care products, moderation in sun-exposure, etc.), results can last for years. Smoking will also diminish the longevity of results.
